The name Chautauqua is thought to come from a Seneca word meaning “a bag tied in the middle” — an apt description of the lake’s pinched shape at Bemus Point.

A short drive in any direction turns up a state park, a country market, a small museum, or a quiet trail. A few of our favorites, by what you might be in the mood for:
Walleye, muskie, and bass right off the dock — plus the best fish-cleaning station and dock setup you will find anywhere on the lake.
A three-minute walk to Redline Drive-In — the newest spot on the lake. Tulip’s Brunch House and the Lakeview Hotel & Restaurant a short drive away in Mayville.
Bring the boat or the jet skis. Swim at Lakeside Park in Mayville, picnic at Long Point State Park, or step aboard the historic Chautauqua Belle steamboat.
Snowmobile trails at the door, blazing fall color in October, and skiing thirty minutes south at Peek ‘n Peak.
